Katherine Legge, born in
Guildford/GB, began racing in cars in
Formula Renault in England in 2000.
Competing in a whole variety of cars
throughout her career, she now competes
in the all-electric Jaguar I-PACE e trophy
for Rahal Letterman racing racing.
TSS: Hello Katherine, thank you for your time.
You are here racing an Jaguar I-PACE in the e-
trophy.How was practice and quali?
KL: Not so good…, we had a problem in qualifying and I ended up P8 and we have a lot of work to do today
– but these things happen.
TSS: The season started pretty good with a win in the first race!
KL: Yes, and with a couple of fastest laps and podiums. But then the last couple of races were really difficult
because I was taken out in Paris and Monaco and now we had a bad qualifying here in Berlin, so it is down
to bad luck, I think.
TSS: How did you get into the Jaguar e-trophy series?
KL: I drove for Bobby Rahals team before – Rahal Letterman Racing - and he
prepared two cars for this series. He called me last winter and asked me “do you
want to drive one of my Jaguar electric cars? That`s how it came together!
TSS: That`not your only programme this year, right?
KL: Yes, I also do GT racing in the US for Michael Shank racing in the Acura. But it is ok,
because the dates do not clash so I can do all the races in both series.
TSS: These are long distance races
where you share your car with a
teammate. What do you prefer,
doing your own stuff or adapt to
someone else in the car?
KL: Hmmm, I think everything has
it`s own merits. I enjoy the 24 hour
races and the other long races
because it`s very much about
strategy. But I also like these sprint
races because it`s more like battling and it`s fun too.
TSS: You also did the Indy 500, there is a wonderful footage on youtube about how you try to qualify the
car for the race – it looks very intense and nerve-wrecking?
KL: Yes, it was my first year in Indy and we originally had a Lotus engine and it was by far the slowest car,
so we struggled a lot. It was the year when Jean Alesi and
Simona de Silvestro also had Lotus engines – he didn`t
make it into the race, Simona and I did! There were five
Lotus engine cars on the grid, and we were only battling
each other because we were the last five cars on the grid…
And in 2013 I had a Honda with Sam Schmidt Racing and I
was only bought in on qualifying day, so I had not driven
the car before. I had to go out and qualify it and they told
me, it`s flat, just go out flat! And my second lap in the car
was already flat! So it was no easy task but it was good.
We were P6 on Carb Day and running really well in the
race, but I brushed the wall and bent a toe link - otherwise
we would have ended up in the top ten for sure!
TSS: What is more fun: Doing road courses or ovals?
KL: Haha…, again I love both… these are completely different disciplines. You have to smart on ovals
because the car changes so much during a stint when the tires drop off and you have to work a lot with the
tools you have in the car: the bars and the weight checkers to make the car the best it can be.
TSS: I guess the experience and the team behind you is very important in Indy as you see with Alonso this
year?
KL: Indy is not easy, especially when you have crashed there – you never have a small crash in Indy! I am
very fortunate, I have never crashed there. When you have no spare car and the team has to rebuild the
car it is tough to keep up with everybody else.
TSS: You went to the US pretty early in your career!
KL: Yes, the US pretty much made me to what I am today. I did a couple of Formula Renault race and the
switched to Formula Atlantic. It was my first full year of racing in America and I won the first race in Long
Beach! That`s what pretty much made my career. Then came ChampCar where I had my big crash
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8h2iqmliVMk) and then came DTM with Susie Stoddart and Vanina
Ickx.
TSS: What`s the difference between your Jaguar i-pace and the DTM Audi back then?
KL: Yeah, there is a huge difference! The DTM cars were really light compared to the Jaguar and they had a
lot of downforce, the Jaguar doesn`t have much downforce. Also we ran on normal road courses not in the
cities like we do now.
TSS: One of the most fascinating cars you drove must have been the Delta Wing – how did that happen?
KL: After IndyCar a guy who ran Bridgestone motorsport in the US called me and asked if I would like to try
the Delta Wing, and I thought: Wow, why not? So I met Don Panoz – he just died unfortunately – and he
was about the coolest person I have ever met in my entire life! He was the entrepreneur behind these
nicotine patches which helps you give up smoking - but he himself smoked about 40 – 60 cigarettes a day,
crazy! Anyway, he was like this, a relly really cool dude, very excentric! And he had the dream that we
would win in this car. We almost made it: we led the Daytona 24h in it!
TSS: Looking from outside, it`s hard to imagine how this thing behaves when turning into a corner?
KL: It drives like an IndyCar, it had a lot of downforce from the ground effects from underneath the car and
it was very light and really fast – I enjoyed it!Then I did Formula E, just a couple of races and I thought, this
will never take off… but then it took-off! Great…, I am an idiot…hahaha!RL: You drove so many different cars
in your career!
KL: Yes, I also did a test for Minardi in F1 and I
drove A1GP for my country, and NASCAR…
TSS: Are you going to write a book when you
finished your career, for sure you have a lot to tell!
KL: Oh yeah…, it is possible!

TSS: Now something completely different! Are you
good in drawing?
KL: No, terrible!
TSS: But I want you to draw your favourite race
car!
KL: Oh, Scheisse…! This is very funny…, no I can`t
draw…. Ok, I will try my Formula Atlantic car from
2005. (Drawing…, laughing a lot…) It`s really no good…
TSS: We see, it is a Formula car, so you are very good! Thank you so much!
KL: You`re welcome! Thank you, nice to meet you! That`s the most interesting interview I have ever done!
